Such Saddness

the news last night as they reported that twelve of thirteen miners in West Virginia had been found alive. I went to bed sad for that one man’s family – to know that he was the only one that didn’t make it. Knowing they would spend years wondering why he couldn’t have survived as well.

I woke up this morning to the news that there was a miscommunication somewhere along the way and that only one miner had been found alive. My heart broke for those families. I again was sad thinking of that one man – knowing the joy, grief, pain, and survivor’s guilt that he will be facing in the days, weeks, months, and years ahead.

These stories always make me cry. I can’t even watch Days of Our Lives without crying (my mom laughs at that fact, but it’s true). I’ve always been a very sensitive person. When I see someone I care about hurting I physically hurt – and to think there was a time I considered going in to pediatric nursing (I’ve considered a lot of careers/majors). Right now my heart is breaking for these people that I don’t even know.

My local newspaper printed two different papers today. An early first edition with the headline 12 Miners Alive After 41 Hours and then a late edition correction 12 of 13 Miners Found Dead. They used the same photo for both stories. This made the families misunderstanding all the more real to me. They believed that their men were coming home to them and in the next breath that hope was taken away from them. Things like this just shouldn’t happen.

To the family, friends, co-workers, and anyone that is suffering from this devastation my heartfelt prayers go out to you. May God bring you strength, peace and comfort in the days and months to come. Nothing can ever fill the void of a lost loved one, but time helps heal the wound and friends, and family can bring you strength and support.
